FREDA staan vir Five Recce Defence Association en was slegs aan lede uitgereik wat aan 5 Recce diens gedoen het. Dit was ‘n amptelike flash. Dan was daar no gander flashes wat 5 Recce ook gehad het nl:

5.1 Commando (“Komesho nonjati”) en was gestasioneer by Fort Rev in Ondangwa

5.2 Commando (“Camels don’t cry)  en was by 5 SFR HK in Phalaborwa

The above flashes are the only official ones that ever existed from 1972 until present day.  The black/white flashes were worn from 1972 to 1993. From 1993-1995, Special Forces was known as 45 Parachute Brigade. They never wore flashes. The maroon/white are the post 1995 flashes. 1 S.F.R. (maroon/white) was disbanded in 1997. Currently only 4 & 5 S.F.R. are active. The S.F. School was only established in 2002. 2 Recce never had a maroon/white flash, because they were already disbanded in 1993. The pre 1993 and post 1995 flashes shown here above are the ONLY genuine official flashes in existance.

The maroon/black flashes below are fantasy fakes that never existed.

The paper drawings flashes below were pencil/paper proposed in 1979, but never adopted.

There is also a fake 2 Recce flash that has other colors around the scorpion. The genuine one is dark green in the centre, around the scorpion, as in the ones displayed above at the top of this web page.

There were also 3 and a 6 Recce Regiments, but they were only activated for a few months during 1980 to absorb the Rhodesian SAS (6 Recce) and Selous Scouts (3 Recce). 3 and 6 Recce Regiments were only activated during 1980-1981, never again, and they never had a flash. There are metal fake flashes on the market representing these units, but they never existed officially. However, there were drawings of a possible 3 and 6 Recce Regiment flash, but they were never proposed. The 3 Recce unofficial flash that was drawn, was unofficially printed on a t-shirt by the members and nothing more.

Koevoet

Operation Koevoet was a pseudo operation conducted by 5 Recce Comdo in the mid-70s in Zambia. The pseudo concept continued and was expanded. At a stage there was involvement in the Kosi Baai and northern Natal, being south of Mozambique, and the Security Police (Brig Dreyer was then the commander in Pietermaritzburg) was approached for sources etc. When Recce pseudo operations were expanded to Owamboland it was decided to continue with police involvement and the idea was to use the same modi operandi as the Selous Scouts and the Special Branch. This was late 70. Due to various reasons there was fallout between the police and the Recces. The police continued as Koevoet.
